Ruth Hortense Butler, my maternal grandmother, was not the daughter of Daniel Lamb Fralic and Anna Maria Sherwood Fralic.  
Anna Fralic unofficially adopted Ruth in about 1903.  The day my then 8 year old grandmother from a poor family in Wellsboro 
Junction, PA walked down Corning's Decatur Street while visiting friends and caught childless, widowed Anna's eye is a seminal moment in my family's history. 

 
I don't believe there was anything formal in this arrangement and therefore nothing put down on paper. 
Initially it was only to last through the winter of 1902-03.  I've used the word "adoption" but I don't believe they considered it as such. 
 
My Uncle Dan, who was born in the Fralic house (by then the Harrington house) in 1919 and named after Daniel Fralic, wrote his autobiography in 1989 and the story of Ruth's "adoption" is detailed in the first pages.  Uncle Dan was delivered by another of Anna's "adopted" children, Ernest Whipple, whom she put through medical school.  According to Uncle Dan, Ernest was a teenager when Ruth went to live with Anna and was also living in the Fralic house.
Also, Uncle Dan's record shows that Ruth was just 7 when she went to live with Anna - which would have been in 1902.
