Notes for LUKE S. JOHNSON:

At the age of 15 years Luke S. Johnson enlisted in the Union service of the United States.  He enrolled in Company H, 43rd Ohio Volunteer Veterans.  The regiment was assigned to the command of Gen. H. A. Hubert, 16th Army Corps, and Fourth Division, under Gen. Dodge.  In the spring of 1864 he was transferred to the First Division, 17th Army Corps, under Gen. F. P. Blair; Gen. Morrow, Division Commander.  The Second Brigade was commanded by Gen. John W. Sprague, of Huron Co., Ohio.

Luke served in the ranks until the fall of Atlanta, when he was detailed as an orderly on the staff of Gen. Sprague, and continued to perform the duties of the position until he received his discharge.  He did not miss an engagement while he was in the service, and was in the hospital but about four hours, while suffering from the effects of heat.  May 1, 1864, his regiment joined Sherman's army at Chattanooga.  The first battle in which he was under fire was at Decatur, Ala.  At the fight at Resaca he sustained a slight wound in the flesh above the left knee joint.  The blood filled his shoe, but he did not fall out.  He participated in the succeeding battles of Dallas, Big Shanty, Kenesaw Mountain and Peach-Tree Creek, where he aided in removing E. F. Noyes, then Colonel of the 39th Ohio, from the field.  Col. Noyes lost his life as a result of his wound, but he gained the stars of a General.  Luke  was also in action in Atlanta when Gen. Hood was in command of the rebel troops.

The following is a history of the Ohio 43 during the period of Luke's enlistment:

"Duty at Memphis, Tenn., till October, and at Prospect, Tenn., till February, 1864. Atlanta (Ga.) Campaign May 1 to September, 1864. Demonstrations on Resaca May 8-13. On receiving his discharge Luke returned to Lorain Co., Ohio.  He and Clarissa A. Case were  married Feb. 18, 1867.  The marriage is recorded at the Lorain County Ohio probate court. He was engaged in a blast furnace in Ohio.  According to the history of Lorain, Ohio, the only blast furnace in operation at the time was run by William McKinley, president McKinley's father.

Luke moved  his family in 1869 from Lorain Co., Ohio, to Saginaw, Michigan.  He was a engineer, in the employ of G. F. Williams & Bros. This was a sawmill operation.  Luke, Clara, and Nelly show up on Michigan 1870 census for Saginaw, fourth ward, on page 119.  Luke & Clara listed their age as 22.  Nelly is listed as being 10 months old.

In March, 1874, the family moved from Saginaw to Caseville, Michigan.  This move was done at the time that William McKinley started operating a blast furnace in Caseville.  According to family oral history, it was William that talked Luke into moving to Caseville.  By 1884 Luke was employed as a foreman in the lumber yard of F. Crawford.  His crew was involved as a scaler and shipper of lumber and salt.   On the 1880 census for Michigan, both Luke and his father, Thomas Johnson, show up in Caseville Township.

Luke entered politics as a Democrat in Caseville.  By 1884, Luke  had served two years as Deputy Sheriff and was  filling his fourth term as Township Clerk.   He was appointed the Caseville postmaster on June 26, 1885 and again on June 10, 1893.  Luke was elected to the Michigan House of 1891-2.  Luke served as the President of the Caseville town council in 1905.  Luke was also one of the founding members of the Caseville Masonic Lodge.

Minnie and George moved into the nine room home, which Minnie's Father

had built for her in 1910. This home in Dutch Town (Caseville) was the

gathering place for the children and the grandchildren. Many family

reunions, birthday parties, picnics and vacations were held there. The

house remained in the family until 1995.

Minnie was a loving Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother always

taking time to spend with each one.

After her marriage to Ray, they built a cottage on beach front property,

left to Minnie by her father (Lake Huron). The house in Dutch Town was

then turned over to her 10 children from her first marriage.

They also bought a Florida home in Fort Pierce where Ray and Minnie,

along with their young son Bill spent their winters.
