1 NOTE Characterized as "the naughty boy" because of his youthful adventures,
2 CONC he was much beloved by his descendants.  Many stories exist about his
2 CONC childhood.  They range from barb wire in the eye, to skin grafts and
2 CONC frog skin coverings as the results of burns, to encouraging fanatics
2 CONC to stone each other, to door knobs on donkey tails, to tricking a Turk
2 CONC in a horse race, to drinking fly poison and on and an on.

2 CONT He went to school in several places in Europe: Athens, Hilterfingen
2 CONC Switzerland, Prussia.   By the time he was 13 and going to school in
2 CONC New Haven, he spoke Turkish, Arabic, French, modern Greek, German but
2 CONC had never read a book in English!. He went to Hotchkiss School in
2 CONC Lakeville CT. He graduated from Harvard.

2 CONT After briefly working for The Boston & Maine railroad in MA, he took
2 CONC employment at the St. Georges School in Newport RI, where he was a
2 CONC French master and athletic coach for 35 years.  He earned extra income
2 CONC by tutoring students in the summer and often traveled as part of these
2 CONC duties.   With WWII and a new headmaster at St. Georges, he went to
2 CONC Santa Barbara to work in a factory, for the war effort, riveting tails
2 CONC on bombers.  He might have taught at the Kate School.

2 CONT Eventually, he settled in Boreago Springs CA living in a trailer near
2 CONC a swimming club, spending time in Mazatland Mexico or motoring up and
2 CONC down the West Coast visiting friends and relatives in his outfitted
2 CONC green GMC van.

1 NOTE "The next minister of the Congregational Church was the Rev. Anson
2 CONC McLoud, whose first and only pastorate was in Topsfield. Ordained in
2 CONC 1841, his ministry continued until 1869, although he remained here for
2 CONC the rest of his life, exerting a great influence in the affairs of the
2 CONC Town. He was for several years Chairman of the School Committee, a
2 CONC Trustee of the library, as well as its librarian and for a short time
2 CONC a member of the Massachusetts Legislature.
2 CONT Anson McLoud resigned his pastorate four years after the close of the
2 CONC Civil War. In this time the fifth Meeting House (Present Church) was
2 CONC built in 1842.  The Vestry and choir loft were added 1853.  The first
2 CONC pipe organ was installed in 1856", say a publication of the Topsfield
2 CONC Historical Society.

2 CONT Biographers note that at least one of his set of sermons is located in
2 CONC the Peabody Museum (formerly Essex Institute) in Salem.  This is also
2 CONC the probable resting place for the Church records from around 1890 and
2 CONC before.

2 CONT "He was also village schoolmaster of the Classics, amateur cabinet
2 CONC maker and farmer.  His church is still there:"   He believed that
2 CONC every man should have more than one occupation. said  Carol Christie

2 CONT "GREENLEAF T. METCALF, High St. This two story house was built for J.
2 CONC Perkins Towne in 1843-4, as a residence for Rev. Anson McLoud. When
2 CONC Mr. McLoud first came to Topsfield he lived in the house owned and
2 CONC occupied by J. Perkins Towne. In 1898-9 it was remodeled somewhat by

2 CONC any game that she played.  Behind a broad smile, uttering words like
2 CONC "oh that is too bad, I'm sorry"; she was ruthless and without pity in
2 CONC things like  tennis, Hearts, scrabble or Go Fish!

1 NOTE Angus McCloud arrived in America in a way that was not uncommon. After
2 CONC the Jacobite Rebellion, and the Highland Clearances, many scots
2 CONC including out ancestor joined the British Army as there was no work
2 CONC and no land for them in Scotland, in the McLoud's case, the Isle of
2 CONC Skye.  He sailed for Canada with Burgoyne's Army in 1776.  That army
2 CONC marched down towards New York with the intention of cutting the
2 CONC colonies in two, but were defeated at Saratoga NY.  The colonists used
2 CONC to circulate to the soldiers of the British army, many of whom were
2 CONC Scots or Germans from Hesse, the offer of a tract of land, seed corn,
2 CONC money and some tools to anyone who deserted.  Whether or not McLoud
2 CONC deserted or availed himself of this offer, I don't know but by the
2 CONC time of the peace, he was a farmer.   Says Carol Christie Gilbart.

2 CONT In the biographical sketches of its Ministers the Topsfield Church
2 CONC published in 1907: " Rev. Anson McLoud, was born June 22, 1813, at
2 CONC East Hartland, Conn., then son of Anson and Clarissa (Beaman) McLoud
2 CONC and a descendant of Aurora McLoud, who immigrated from Scotland during
2 CONC the French and Indian Wars."

2 CONT In "PreRevolutionary McLouds in Connecticut" by Robert and Helen
2 CONC Search of New Harbor ME, "It is the accumulation of several years work
2 CONC collecting items relating to McLoud in the hope of proving the
2 CONC identity of Angus McLoud who married in the First Eccelesiastical
2 CONC Society, hartland, Conn., 18 Feb 1784, Sarah Giddings.  This couple
2 CONC were the grandparents of the Rev. Anson McLoud, Minister of the
2 CONC Congregational Chturch Topsfield, Mass.."  RCC  notes that this
2 CONC wonderful four page document could only conclude with its only other
2 CONC mention of Angus:  "each named a son Norman and the name is found
2 CONC frequently among the decendants of Angus McLoud of Hartland".

2 CONC wife Jane who was the more forbidding Puritan.  They [ Malcolm and
2 CONC Sarah Andrews?] had a large family and when they were grown up and
2 CONC living in Boston and returned for Sunday and stayed to dinner, and one
2 CONC of them would say something funny, Anson would leave the table
2 CONC pressing his napkin to his face, and Jane would scold the children
2 CONC saying: "You know Mr. McLoud can't laugh on the Sabbath."
